Can You Stop Saving for Retirement After Reaching Coast FIRE?

Reaching an estimated Coast FIRE milestone can inform a decision, but it does not replace a broader review of goals, risks, and tradeoffs.

Quick answer

What this article explains

Reaching an estimated Coast FIRE number may show that your current investments could grow to a target under your chosen assumptions. It does not, on its own, tell you that pausing contributions is appropriate or safe for your situation.

What the milestone means

The milestone is a calculation result, not a recommendation. It depends on the retirement age, spending, expected return, inflation, withdrawal-rate assumption, and current invested assets you entered.

If any of those inputs change, the projected Coast FIRE number and age can change too.

Questions to review before reducing contributions

Review the parts of your plan that the calculator intentionally leaves out. A useful decision process should include your cash reserves, debt, expected earnings, benefits, tax considerations, insurance, and tolerance for a less favorable outcome.

  • Would you still feel comfortable if returns are lower or inflation is higher than assumed?
  • Are you comfortable with the retirement spending and target age used in the estimate?
  • What flexibility would you keep if your expenses or work plans change?

Use scenarios, not certainty

Try several reasonable scenarios in the calculator rather than relying on one optimistic input set. Continuing even a smaller contribution may change the projection and can add margin for the uncertainties a simple calculator does not model.

Common questions

What if I reach Coast FIRE at exactly my retirement age?

That is still a projection based on the inputs. There may be little time to absorb different returns, spending, or unexpected costs.

Should I speak with a professional before changing savings?

For a significant decision, consider a qualified professional who can assess details this educational calculator does not cover.
